Root canal treatment

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is a dental procedure that is used to treat damaged or infected teeth. This treatment involves removing the damaged or infected pulp from inside the tooth and filling the space with a material that will help restore the tooth’s function and strength.

Here are some key components of root canal treatment:

  1. Diagnosis: Your dentist will first examine your teeth and take X-rays to determine if root canal treatment is necessary. Common symptoms that may indicate the need for a root canal include severe pain when biting or chewing, sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, swelling and tenderness in the gums, and a darkening of the tooth.

  2. Anesthesia: Before the procedure begins, your dentist will administer local anesthesia to numb the area around the affected tooth.

  3. Pulp removal: Your dentist will then create an opening in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. Using specialized tools, they will carefully remove the damaged or infected pulp from inside the tooth.

  4. Cleaning and shaping: Once the pulp is removed, your dentist will clean and shape the inside of the tooth to prepare it for filling. They may also use an antimicrobial solution to eliminate any remaining bacteria and reduce the risk of further infection.

  5. Filling: Your dentist will then fill the space inside the tooth with a material called gutta-percha, which is a rubber-like substance that helps seal the tooth and restore its function and strength.

  6. Crown placement: In most cases, a crown or other restoration will be placed over the tooth to protect it and restore its appearance. This may be done immediately after the root canal treatment, or in a separate appointment.

Root canal treatment is a common and effective way to treat damaged or infected teeth and prevent the need for extraction. It is a relatively painless procedure and can be completed in just one or two appointments, depending on the severity of the damage or infection. If you are experiencing any symptoms that may indicate the need for a root canal, contact your dentist to schedule an examination and discuss your treatment options.
